SANDY THE WONDER DOG

An unforgettable dog, an epic adventure

Sandy, a golden retriever puppy, has discovered a secret while living in the home of the Leóns, a farmworker family in central Wisconsin. She tucks it safely away, grows up, and lives a happy life.
But one night, everything changes. Bad news from far way forces a decision: Sandy, now fully grown, and her mate Bruno decide to leave with their four pups on a journey that soon goes very wrong. They find themselves lost in the wintery Rocky Mountains. The struggle to survive the snows and dangers will test each one to their limits.
But Sandy is no ordinary dog. She uses her secret and learns to rely on a cast of memorable characters along the way in the quest to find her human family again.
A tale of struggle, courage, and finding one’s family where least expected, Sandy the Wonder Dog is a serious adventure sure to keep children ages 6-11 (along with some of their parents and grandparents) reading well past their bedtime.

Fred Groos

Fred Groos was born in Hastings, Michigan. He worked for many years at La Clínica de los Campesinos, in Wild Rose, and then Wautoma, Wisconsin providing medical care for farmworkers from Mexico and Central America. He finished up his medical career in the United States working several years in Marquette, Michigan and then retired in 2024. He and his wife, Jeanne, also a physician, have been active in providing health care in Peru since 2002.

He is fascinated by the novels of Carlos Ruiz Zafón. Someday, he hopes to know 100 jazz songs on the piano. He and his wife love hearing about their four children’s adventures, with and without dogs. It’s very likely that Nina, his childhood dog, and Zach, his children’s dog, both made him a better person.

He lives with his wife in Marquette, Michigan. Sandy the Wonder Dog and Sandy la perra maravillosa, the Spanish version, are his first novels.

Fred Groos Books

Greetings readers!
My book, Sandy the Wonder Dog, has just been sent to the printer, Lake Superior Press, in Marquette, Michigan. It has been a pleasure working with them as they helped me get the book over the finish line.  They will be printing 100  soft bound copies for the English version and 75 copies of Sandy, la perra maravillosa, the Spanish version. Some of these will be available in the local Marquette bookstores, Bromley’s Books and Snowbound Books. I hope to have a book signing soon in these stores.

At the same time, the books should be available soon on IngramSpark, a national print on demand company that will be able to have the books available to order through local bookstores and possibly larger national outlets. I also plan on donating a copy in each language to the Peter White Public Library in Marquette. More info on this to follow soon.

Happy reading,
Fred Groos
